I see a bedroom as a sanctuary. The space should encourage relaxation & promote peace.
I might lose some of you here, but…we don’t have a television in the bedroom. 😬
There are some good reasons, though–some of which are related to your health! This article speaks to both sides of the debate but personally I’m against it for our home and think any of the pros can easily be substituted for something else. For example:
- Some people find the white noise helpful. I purchased a white noise machine specifically for this purpose. It has the regular white noise setting plus brook, thunder, ocean, rain, and summer night cricket sounds. I’ve had it for years and I know a lot of people get it for their kids but we absolutely love it for ourselves.
- We’re 68-69 degree temperature people when it comes to the bedtime thermostat! Even so, it can get a bit warm with our sheets & comforters at night. So we got this standing, oscillating fan (comes with a remote, too!) to both help us stay cool and provide some white noise. We’ve found the medium speed is the sweet spot! We have a street behind our house that tends to have a lot of trucks and while it’s not super disruptive, this fan does help to drown them out. It has definitely improved mine & my husband’s sleep quality.
Anyhoo…back to “bedroom as a sanctuary.” Lighting, colors, textures, furniture placement: they all matter and contribute to how relaxed you’ll feel in this space.
Today, I’ll share with you some purchases we’re very happy with and are both good quality and affordable. SHARE TIME!
I really don’t love the feeling of a wood floor underneath my feet first thing in the morning. For both aesthetic reasons (adding color) and comfort reasons, I knew I needed to get a rug and I am SO happy with this one. Machine-washable, non-slip backing, SUPER soft, and comes in multiple sizes & colors.
We have a few decorative pillows as part of our bedding set but didn’t really have a good place to put them in the evenings. Now, we do! This little guy stores the pillows away at night and acts as a another seat. It is a little low to the ground, which was fine for us. But if you’d like something taller, not to worry! You can always change out the legs. I recommend adding the height of the ottoman (no legs) and the height of the legs you want to buy separately to make sure it’ll work for your space.
We actually got this chest of drawers for my husband & he loves it! These drawers are quite deep, so they can fit a lot of items. The building process was very fun and straight-forward and you can tell it’s good quality wood. The frame is also screwed in and has those little wood dowels for extra strength & stability.
The measurements were perfect for our space–I think this is a great pick for smaller spaces, too. Also, the top drawer has a lock & key, which is pretty sweet if you want to secure some personal items or documents. Several colors available.
Comes in multiple colors/finishes & has two rods so you can place an inner & an outer. Not sure if there’s a rule to this, but I’d think you can do sheer or blackout as your inner or outer curtain–really depends on which has the design element. For example, if the sheer curtain has a design, you probably want that on the outside rode so the blackout one isn’t covering it. Some ideas to consider!
If you’re in the market for blackout drapes, look no further. They’re polyester but my goodness they feel so luxurious! Right now, they’ve got over 10 sizes, over 15 colors, and they’ll do the job in blocking out the light from outside. These have definitely helped to improve our sleep quality and as for the curtain rod above, we put these on the inner rod closest to the window.
And last but not least, these gorgeous sheer curtains that we used as the outer curtain.
It turns out I’m really sensitive to lighting and I really thrive with lots of natural light in my home. However, I wanted to ensure a measure of privacy as well during the daytime. This, plus the double curtain rod, and the darkening curtains were the perfect combo. I got the Vine | Beige one you see here.
