One of my favorite passion projects ever!
It all started with a vision.
I’m a first-time homeowner as of September 2023 (thank you, Lord!) & it has been my joy to beautify and improve our home. It’s really been a collaborative effort between my husband & I (we have very similar tastes so we agree on most things).
My patio space has a lot of neutral tones with some pops of green on the pillows. I absolutely love how it’s coming along but definitely felt like it was missing something. As is my custom, I started searching on Pinterest for inspiration. Although I didn’t find anything that made me say “this is it”, a picture did start to develop in my mind.
I don’t know if you know this, but planters can be expensive! While furniture shopping over the past few months, I’ve seen gorgeous planters in many different stores but without fail, every time I check the price tag, it’s $200+!
DIY it is. 🙂
We were sure we wanted a fake but realistic looking plant in the corner on our coffee table but not quite sure what kind, how tall, etc. But, we did know we didn’t want to put too much weight on the table, which is topped with tempered glass.
I knew I wanted the pot to be attractive and have some subtle design elements & coordinate with the rest of the neutral furniture & flooring we put it. I also really felt like stones in neutral colors would be the right way to draw attention to it without having it clash with anything. The frames of our furniture are a rich, dark brown so I reasoned that multi-colored stones instead of just one color would help to complement all the colors we have going on in the space.
SO, after some browsing around & determining that some sort of palm would be perfect for this Florida lanai, I put together what you see below!
- The pot itself is made of plastic, which I didn’t mind.
- The palm I chose is 5′ high. Glad I didn’t go any shorter, even though it is on the coffee table. The leaves are so easy to bend and shape to your liking. Don’t be afraid to really apply some pressure until you get the look you want.
- I put the base of the plant on TOP of a foam brick to give it some extra height, then cut a few extra pieces and shoved them in around the base of the plant to stabilize it and ensure it didn’t move. The foam bricks are so easy to cut. If you’ve ever been to a florist’s shop, this is what they use for arrangements!
- Finally, I used 5lbs of the stones to completely cover the foam and also the top of the plant base, so it gives the illusion of being filled with the stones. Some of the stones are more matte and others are more glossy. I love this variety and at certain points of the day when they catch the sunlight, it looks so beautiful.
This entire mini-project was so affordable & I’m so glad I was able to create something we really enjoy. I’m sure you can mirror it in your own space, too!
