Let me start by saying I love our home. It’s got some imperfections but hey, most places need some measure of work when you move in. Comes with the territory!
However, this laundry room…
It was not only my least favorite room in the house on account of that horrid yellow but it was the least FUNCTIONAL. Very limited shelf space which meant very little space to fold on top of the washer/dryer since I had no where else to put anything really, a broken utility organizer, no cabinets. And worst of all, that yellow (yes, I’m mentioning it again).
Initially, we deprioritized fixing up the laundry room in favor of doing our lanai & garage first (can’t wait to share the garage update soon!). But after our son was born, I started to have a change of heart regarding prioritization of a much-needed laundry room makeover.
See, people don’t talk enough about how when you have kids, it’s not just that the sheer amount of laundry grows exponentially, but you also have less time to fold it & put it away. And THAT is how it piles up everywhere & doesn’t get stored in their proper homes.
My husband saw how the laundry pile & lack of space was stressing me out so we agreed to tackle the laundry room & garage overhaul together at the same time. They are right next to each other & now that we had a workbench and did some nifty organizing in our garage, these kinds of projects were more feasible. THANK YOU, LORD!
My husband had primary input on our garage & I had primary input on our laundry room, since I field most of the laundry-doing in our household. He wanted to be sure that it was functional for me specifically, which I really appreciate. But we still discussed everything & aligned on choices so we’d both be happy with the spaces! We had a blast working on this & WOW what a night and day difference. So much functionality has been added here and it finally feels like a legitimate, complete room in it’s own right.
For anyone wondering what paint we chose, it’s Grey Heron from Sherwin Williams. We also used it in the garage & absolutely love it. It’s light enough to not darken the room but saturated enough to be distinct from the white baseboards. It’s also not so blueish in tone that it makes the room look cold. It’s truly a beautiful, versatile, neutral gray.
I’m so excited to share all the products I got to make my laundry room dream a reality. I’ve divided them into “Functional Stuff” & “Decorative/Aesthetic Stuff” for your convenience. I hope it inspires you to take your laundry room to the next level & take the stress out of this chore. Helps to have a space you actually enjoy being in!

Notes:
- My original vision was completely grayscale for the color palette: black, white, and various tones of gray. However, hubby thought keeping the tile floor and sprinkling the beige throughout would add some much-needed warmth and I’m glad I listened!
- Our final color palette actually ended up being all the neutrals: black, white, gray, brown, and beige. I’m usually drawn to warmer colors anyways and I think the space just looks really cohesive and truly our own style. This is probably considered modern farmhouse.
- Inside the rope baskets, I keep some helpful laundry items: stain removers & lint rollers in one, and a lost socks drop space for the other.
- Fun Fact: We took one shelf from inside each of the cabinets, got some black spray paint from Home Depot, sprayed them, and mounted them on the side of the cabinet above the hanging rod!
- The hanging rod is *not* a tension rod (my bad) but I wanted to get wall mounts for additional support anyway, hence why I bought them separately. It came with screws and adhesives so I used the adhesive backing for the cabinet mount & screws for the wall mount. For the rod itself, I just put a few bits of tape on the inside rod to keep it from collapsing. Voila!
